#69191 Internet Safety & Your Rights

Posted by rannmann on 06 February 2014 - 12:22 PM

I just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone, especially our younger folks, that strangers on the internet have the potential to be dangerous.  When filling out your user profile, remember that everyone will be able to see that information, including your age and gender.  If you added your interests, it is very easy for someone to pretend to have a lot in common with you.

As community, we want all of our members to feel comfortable. If someone is acting inappropriately to you in private (or public), speak up!  Even if it doesn't bother you that much, odds are he/she has a history of such behavior and will continue to act this way to others.  By reporting this behavior, we can make a note of it and intervene.  We are here to provide a safe and fun place to play games and interact with others.  If someone is making you feel uncomfortable, let one of the administrators know, or open a ticket.

The FBI offers these tips to the younger populace:

  • Never give out your name, home address, school name, or phone number to strangers on the internet.
  • Never send a picture of yourself to someone you chat with without your parent's permission
  • Never write to someone who has made you feel uncomfortable or scared
  • Report things that make you feel uncomfortable to your parents (or FP staff)
  • Remember that people online may be misrepresenting themselves

We take reports of harassment very seriously.  In the event that an underage individual is being sexually harassed, we will file the appropriate reports to local and federal authorities on your behalf.

Stay safe out there,

rann

#174859 Meet your new head admin

Posted by rannmann on 17 January 2016 - 07:42 PM

It's my pleasure to welcome @Savage aboard as a full-fledged Head Admin.  "Meet" might be a bit strong since he's been with us for so long, but if you don't know him make sure to say hello to our newest purple-named staff member!

The head admin role is an odd one since we all tend to do different things.  McKay handles most the gameserver/plugin/bot stuff, I handle most the website/server/legal stuff, and Savage will handle most the community-progression/outreach/popularity stuff.  We all overlap in all these departments, but we're in near constant communication with one another so if you have a question or suggestion about the community, reach out to any one of us.

I'm sure the first question some of you will have is "Why the fresh meat?"  When we launched FirePowered, we had three head admins and our community consisted of around 50 people.  For the past two years or so though, it has just been McKay and I have been leading FP, with the help of the rest of the staff (okay, so maybe they've been doing most the work, but we've been taking care of the technical stuff!).  Being developers, McKay and I originally set FP up so it could mostly sit on autopilot while we work on new and exciting improvements.  A lot of time has passed and we find ourselves with virtually no free time left at the end of our work days to contribute anything meaningful.  Since neither of us have been around much to help guide the community forward (we pop in to put out fires), a top-level change seemed appropriate.  We hope this new leadership will usher FP into a new prosperous age of expansion, possibly even into other games.

So join me in welcoming @Savage by spamming this thread with requests/demands of all the things he should get done right away!  Put this man to work before he has a chance to turn into a big purple slacker.  superhappy.gif

#90142 Congratulations Savage!

Posted by LBJ on 05 May 2014 - 01:03 PM

@Savage is a long time member, friend, bro, and colleague of the FirePowered community. He is one busy dude who handles so many tasks like the member applications and our Reddit presence (survey, ama, etc). He is an active community administrator who has demonstrated excellent leadership when working with the admin team.

Just not long ago, Savage was promoted to his new position as senior administrator after a unanimous decision was made by the current senior admins and head admins. He very much deserved his promotion. The senior admin team will be looking forward to working with him in the years to come.

Please congratulate Savage on his promotion.

#174265 Thank you to some FirePowered Friends

Posted by Savage on 06 January 2016 - 03:12 PM

Today (or yesterday, or maybe tomorrow) we say "goodbye" to five members of the admin team. Lucky for us, it's not a true goodbye, since most of them will continue on as Sr Members in our community! I want to thank @Brudda, @dankDuck, @Eisotopius, @Jimmydabig, and @sun for their hard work as Mods and Admins. All of them have chosen to set aside their staff titles as they cannot currently dedicate the necessary time to being an admin here. They all have contributed a lot to this community, and they all know that if their time allows in the future, they will be welcomed back to the admin team. Thank you all for your hard work!

#145904 Posting Etiquette

Posted by Lotso on 04 March 2015 - 06:16 PM

If you are new, I highly suggest you read this before going off into the forums!

Hello all of FirePowered. This is the thread where you can learn the basics of FirePowered Posting, Threading, all the good stuffs! smile.gif

What will be covered? What to and what not to post. What to and what not to make a thread about. Along with general tips.

Before we delve too deep, I'd like to highlight this term, as FirePowered Forums and centered around it.

group discussion - a discussion among participants who have an agreed (serious) topic; consideration of a question in open and usually informal debate; the act of talking about something with another person or a group of people: a conversation about something

In the case that you have a question or suggestion, please consider asking the help desk, moderators, or admins, who can be noted by their pink, blue, orange, or purple server names.

Posts and Threads

Let's start small by introducing all of the subforums on FirePowered.

General Discussion

-For this subforum, you can post a wide array of topics.

Introductions

-This is where you start a thread to introduce yourself if you're new, pretty simple.

Multimedia

-This is the thread where you share videos, pictures, writings, etc. It doesn't even have to be your own stuff, as long as you don't plagiarize. This subforum is essentially deviantArt + Youtube having a kid.

Technology

-This subforum is dedicated to all you techies and your technological needs. Post your tech questions and answers here.

Advertisements and Classifieds

-Bored and rich? Stop here and pick out things that sound good to you. You can also post advertisements here, just in case Walmart is forcing you to advertise their new products. Specific addendum: This section is the place you want to go to advertise things like your steam group or youtube channel. Those two things are just a fraction of the things that you can advertise here.

Team Fortress 2

-Post all your TF2 ideas here, whether it be loadout contests, competitive information, or mods.

Trading

-Trade your whole backpack here! Excellent for those needing that extra key.

Other Games

-Bored of TF2? Check out this section to recommend games as well as get ideas for what to play.

General Tips and Advice

First off, heed this advice:

Post things that can create discussion. It's nice to discuss, seeing as this is a forum website. We can discuss anything, as long as it's somewhat known, or if you can tell us enough about it so we can get an idea. Another, and the most important rule, is to not break any rules with what you post.

Another very important tip is to check the forums for any threads that you're going to create. To do this, type key words into the search bar in the top right part of every page. If you see any threads that might be duplicates of what you're going to create, check to see how old they are.

If the thread is OVER 3 months old, feel free to make a new one about it. If it is UNDER 3 months old, you can post in the thread with your thoughts. If you're unsure about posting in an old thread, or making a duplicate thread, please feel free to contact an admin, they're always happy to help!

What to do and what not to do.

DO

1. Make relevant posts.

2. Make discussable posts and threads.

3. Make meaningful replies and threads.

DO NOT

1. Make 1 word/1 sentence replies, these limit conversation and just take up space.

2. Make rule-breaking posts and threads.

3. Make pointless replies and threads.

DON'T MAKE POINTLESS GAME THREADS!

In the case of brainstorming threads, please, oh for the love of God, please post some ideas in your opening post. It helps us know what to talk about and what to say. If you do not make ideas in your opening post, you better have a good reason, or else you will limit the replies and discussable content in the thread.

Examples of Good and Bad Threads!

Good!

https://firepoweredg...d-of-pointless/

^^^This thread allows easy, well-known discussion between members.

https://firepoweredg...ions-dream-job/

^^^ This threads also allows easy, well-known discussion between members.

https://firepoweredg...4-mafia-game-3/

^ A game thread that is actually good. It's probably best in most cases to ask an admin if a certain game thread is okay.

Bad!

https://firepoweredg...in-the-raffles/

^^^ It's a problem or question that could easily be solved using the help desk.

https://firepoweredg...ures-in-replys/

^^^ Also a question, could be solved using the help desk.

https://firepoweredg...loyalty-points/

^^^ Problems go to the help desk. DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE HELP DESK!

https://firepoweredg...me-rides-again/

https://firepoweredg...h-the-sentence/

^^^ Both are word games, which are essentially ember farming mechanics that are one of the big no-no's of FirePowered, as they provide no room for discussion.

https://firepoweredg...ty/#entry153791

^ Don't be Notso.

Important Addendum

https://firepoweredg...with-me-anyone/

^this is a good example of not searching before you make a thread. Always look for existing threads which may serve the same use as the topic you want to create. You won't always find them, and that's OK; in that case, go right ahead and create one for yourself. If you do create one that's essentially duplicate thread, admins don't usually make too big a deal about it. They'll just direct you to the existing thread, and lock yours, and all is well. Feel free to bump any old threads with the same topic, as long as the last post is not over 3 months old.

https://firepoweredg...from-edgeworth/

https://firepoweredg...-to-visit-1-10/

^both of these are cool ideas, but are not presented as they should be to make them into successful threads. When you create a new thread, try to make the topic matter broad so that as many people as possible can relate to and post in it, creating interesting discussion. For example, that first thread could have been a "favorite quotes" thread, and your quote from Miles Edgeworth would have been the first post. Similarly, the list of countries the individual wanted to visit could have been titled "Where in the world do you want do go?" and then the first post could have been your list of 10 countries.

Third, remember that there are other ways to express yourself on this site besides just creating threads. You can make a status to share exciting things in your life by hitting the down arrow next to your username and typing in the empty text box which appears.

Here is a visual example of this process.

The Z Dog {NTOTB}: Eat shit cum bag

Yeah...

Anyway, you have every right to report us for admin abuse to Valve. I would like to know, however, what makes you think that Valve particularly cares that you were banned from a non-Quickplay trade server for three days for trying to rip people off buy "discounted" unusuals. I don't personally care if you report us, and I don't think any of the staff cares either, since we know that your report will just be ignored. Therefore, your report has no impact on any perceived threats from us.

As a community owner, especially as a trade community owner, you should know that reading a server's rules is very important. You chose to ignore our rules, and as such, you received a consequence.

I'd like to say that I personally believe our staff team to be one of the best. It's not hard to stay on our good side. Anyone who's traded for more than a couple months knows that a "50% discount" and a quicksell are the exact same thing. Stop disillusioning yourself.

#86993 PSA: Forum Posting

Posted by Fridgeraider™ on 22 April 2014 - 10:43 AM

I'm back from my little vacation, and general break from policing the forums. As I'm reading through old threads I've noticed a few things that concerned me that I wish to point out to our group in general because I feel that in reading this it may help the community in general.

First off, for those who are new to the community or for people who have never bothered to look, you should take a moment to review our rules which can be found directly through this link:

https://firepoweredg...rums/page/rules

Study them because I'm going to be enforcing them quite heavily to weed out some rubbish.

I've noticed a bit of trollishness in a few peoples posts (mostly from new people), a few people have been pointed out to me as using bigoted language in their posts, and there have been a few topics that have been posted with no real purpose as to why they exist. This stuff all needs to chill out, and it needs to be cleaned up some. I'm not saying there is a huge problem by any means, but a few bad apples will make the entire place smell rotten.

When FP first came about, the forums was my illegitimate love child to beat with a wooden spoon whenever it became necessary. My wooden spoon has a fresh coat of polish, so behave and treat people respectfully or I may have to scuff up my spoon a little. It's alright to disagree, to have different beliefs, to think for yourself, to be vocal, but be smart and polite to your peers when discussing your opinions because this is suppose to be a friendly environment for everyone to enjoy equally regardless of who you are or where you came from.

#115232 Changes to the admin structure

Posted by Savage on 07 September 2014 - 05:23 PM

About 8 months ago we changed the admin positions of Moderator and Admin to Support Administrator and Community Administrator. There were a few reasons for that change, but the biggest component was the addition of our Help Desk. The new admin roles were set up to reflect Tiers of technical support in anticipation of the requests we'd receive.

It's become pretty clear to us that our current system is focused too heavily on the Help Desk, which doesn't receive enough requests to justify the number of Support Admins we currently have (who are tasked with handling those tickets). Additionally, the roles of the admin positions don't seem transparent to the community. There is a lot of "behind the scenes" stuff that goes on, and I think to many people it seems like our admins aren't present, when in reality they are working in systems that aren't entirely front-facing.

Finally, we believe that the current jump in responsibilities from Sr. Member to Support Admin is too high. There are a number of systems that our Support Admins are required to be familiar with, and it takes a long time to teach new admins how to use these systems, and the guidelines we have for them.

For these reasons, we will be restructuring our admin positions. We'll be returning to the Moderator and Administrator titles (Sr. Admin and Head Admin will stay the same).

Moderators

These staff members will be our in-server specialists. They will have all the current capabilities of a Support Admin in terms of in-server "powers," as well as the necessary tools to do this job (SourceBans, IRC, Mumble, etc.).

Administrators

Like before, these staff members will still be tasked with in-server administration, but they will have the added responsibilities of handling Help Desk tickets, moderating the forums, and making decisions on member applications.

_________________________________________________________

Regardless of title, all of our staff members are full members of the administration team and attend our monthly staff meetings, participate in staff discussions, and lead the community.

For our current staff members, position changes are reflective of each individual's strengths, available time, and their own input on where they feel they'd be the most successful.

All current and future applications for Support Administrator are now applications for the Moderator position.

The majority of these changes will be taking place this evening, but some work will likely carry over into tomorrow. It will take us some time to get all of the documentation and pages up to date, so bear with us for a few days (or weeks) until everything is updated. We'll try to prioritize the most public documents first.

I'd just like to remind everyone that our staff members are exactly that: staff. We don't give Moderator or Admin titles to anyone as a reward or as a symbol of their time in the community. Being a FirePowered Staff Member is ultimately a job, not a privilege. Each staff member deserves a great deal of gratitude for the time that they have volunteered. Being an admin isn't always fun or convenient, and I'd like to personally thank our staff for the work that they do.
