After some discussion among the admins, we wanted to have a conversation with the community about binds. In TF2 in general, the use of binds is clearly on the rise, but we've been becoming concerned about extensive use of certain binds in our community.

I want to start by clarifying a few things:

  • No one is in trouble
  • This is not directed at any individual player
  • Our rules are not changing

With that being said, let's remind ourselves of a few rules:

  • No spamming
  • No abusive language
  • No harassment
  • No bigotry

I want everyone to take a hard look at their use of binds and make sure they're not breaking any of these rules. In general, we want to see fewer "taunt" binds like "rekt" or "scrub." We are not saying that you can't ever say "rekt" after a kill, but we don't want to see people saying it after every kill. Regardless of your status as a member or non-member, constant use of taunt binds reflects poorly on our community.

I used "rekt" as an example, but let's look at another: a "med down" or "med dropped" bind that's sent to server chat (rather than team chat). It's pretty clear that this kind of bind is designed solely to get under people's skin. This is a good example of a bind that we don't want to see in server chat (team chat would make more sense). Again, it's totally fine to make fun of your friend (or me) for dropping uber, but let's get away from using these binds on a constant basis.

Like I said, no one is in trouble, and no one's going to get banned or punished for this. If we do see excessive use of taunt-y binds, an admin may approach that person privately to ask them to tone it down. As a point of clarification, none of this applies to non-taunt binds, as long as you're not spamming them (this game is the Kanye best).

At the end of the day, TF2 is a game, and occasional shit-talking is okay, but we need to balance it with creating a welcoming community on our servers, and the admins feel that the use of some binds has reached a point where they are interfering with that.

Feel free to discuss or ask questions here, but I'd ask that if you have questions about a particular bind you use, that you direct them to me or another admin by PM.

As an additional note, if you see someone in-game using binds that you feel go against the spirit of this message, please do not use !report. We'd prefer you message an admin privately so that we can have a one-on-one discussion with them. Of course, if they're spamming or being bigoted, etc., please do utilize the report function so that we can take care of it immediately.

Yeah, I realized this and unbinded most of my binds a while back. The only one i have still binded is wuts aiming, which is kinda becoming a trademark of myself somehow.

I never use binds. Occasionally, if I'm on a trade server and need to sell something, I'll write a message, copy it, and occasionally paste it in to a new message so I don't have to type it all the time, but that's it.

There's no need to call anyone out on their binds here. For the most part, people will figure it out on their own, and like I said, if there's an actual problem, and admin will address it privately.

I've bound "thanks," "spy," and "nice shot" to my numpad. That's not an issue, unless I spam them, right?

Shouldn't be, and depending on the situation that's actually a fairly courteous thing to do, since it's harder to forget to thank people for helping you.  :pblush2:

What @Savage is talking about here is how people often bind keys using the console to type out certain words or short phrases in chat with the intent of spamming them, which gets annoying and aggravating fast particularly if used after kills (you may, for instance, have been around players who spam

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), this is how they do that).

Built-in voice commands have a buffer built into them to deter spamming them, but obviously you can get kicked if you do. But some don't have accompanying chat announcements (like "nice shot"), and the ones that do are I believe only visible to your teammates, so as long as you use them responsibly you'll be fine.

thanks, spy, and nice shot are all voice commands. Z2 for thanks, X2 for spy, and C7 for nice shot just a heads up

I used to have a really great bind setup for team chat. Since I don't use a mic, I had the numpad set up to do binds that when a number was pressed, it would say "Incoming <class #>" where 1 was Scout, 2 Soldier, etc. And if the numpad "+" button was held while pressing one of the numbers, it would say "Incoming <class #> + Medic!" which was super great. Too bad I accidentially deleted all my configs and the 100+ lines of config stuff I had setup :(

I can't get too many binds because I don't know how to bind to the keypad because my computer won't allow it for some reason.

I believe you just add kp to the number for keypads. For example, bind kp8.

Not quite. It's the keypad button's alternate function. For instance, 8 would be "KP_UPARROW". 5 is the only exception, which is just "KP_5".

Try this.

// ====[ START incoming_class.cfg ]====

bind kp_end "say_team Incoming Scout"
bind kp_downarrow "say_team Incoming Soldier"
bind kp_pgdn "say_team Incoming Pyro"
bind kp_leftarrow "say_team Incoming Demoman"

bind kp_rightarrow "say_team Incoming Engineer"
bind kp_home "say_team Incoming Medic"
bind kp_uparrow "say_team Incoming Sniper"
bind kp_pgup "say_team Incoming Spy"

bind kp_plus +incoming_class_with_medic

alias +incoming_class_with_medic "exec incoming_class_with_medic.cfg"
